McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. (McCarthy), one of the largest and most diversified construction companies in America for over 160 years, today announced the completion of the 100th location of modern golf entertainment leader, Topgolf. Located in Montebello California, the $47,000,000, 65,000 square-foot, three-story venue anchors the redesigned Montebello Golf Course that the City of Montebello recently transformed into two courses.
The location features 102 hitting bays, one kitchen and 425 parking spaces with 22 EV charging stations. The City of Montebello serves as the landowner, with Troon as the operator of both courses. The city’s redevelopment also includes a new clubhouse as well as water features across the entire golf course development.
The building is located at the lowest elevation of the site; coupled with frequent rain during construction this added the challenge of navigating moist soil. As a result, the McCarthy team amended the soil by and brough in nearly 15,000 yards of soil to ensure proper compaction and bring it up to code.
McCarthy had the added challenge of constructing while two neighboring golf courses were constructed, and unforeseen hazardous material had to be removed. Despite these challenges, McCarthy delivered the project on time because of its shared services and collaborative approach. Further, McCarthy leaned into its robust safety practices to ensure there were zero recordable injuries during the course of the project.
“Working with Topgolf for a third time and the City of Montebello for the first time was truly a dream for McCarthy, said Andrew Raufi, VP Project Executive, McCarthy. “Despite encountering some weather challenges, we were able to deliver the project on-time with zero recorded safety incidents while engaging local small business partners to help complete the project. Overall, it was a triumph!”
Additional McCarthy services included full modeling, mapping, build-out, concrete, shared services, and MEP. The building was designed to standards including seismic outfitting and energy efficiency.
McCarthy achieved a 47% spend with small and diverse owned businesses, contracting directly with 14 different businesses on this project, totaling over $16.9M in spend. In addition to bringing 400+ jobs to the area, the project helps to revitalize the area, bringing additional revenue and traffic to the city. The City of Montebello financed the project through a series of revenue bonds.
The McCarthy team spent over 112,000 labor hours on the project during the 15 months it took to complete. This is the third Topgolf location McCarthy has constructed. McCarthy partnered with the City of Montebello to develop the project and Architect Aria Group.
